This article is just going to be a brief overview of the Google Doc released by RocketSnail through the Beta testing mailing list email sent a few weeks ago. This is in no way, shape or form created to take away from him, if you want to sign up for beta testing emails, click the button below to become a beta tester.
Overview!
A simple RPG card game that will start out as single player, and overtime become multiplayer. In this game, you can encounter monsters by wandering around the world. When clicking the monsters, you have two choices, talk to it, or fight it.
Interacting with Enemies:
While walking around the world, critters will spot the enemies standing around the map, and when they click on the enemies, they have two options; they can either fight the enemy or talk to the enemy.
When you Talk to an Enemy:
- The Screen Darkens
- A Close-Up View of the Monster Appears
- A Dialogue Bubble Appears
When You Fight An Enemy:
- Other players can’t join in the battle; RocketSnail said, they “Go transparent”.
- The camera travels to an anchor point to ensure all the monsters are visible
- A vignette makes the edges of your screen darker, to focus on attention during the battle.
- UI starts to appear
Before Starting A Battle
After Starting a Battle
During a Battle
If you began a battle, three options on your screen should appear, those options are, the Player Card (On the top left), the Chicken Button (On the top right), and A Health Bar for the Monster (Below said enemy).
Player Card:
The Player Cards have five components to them, and they are
- The Player Name
- Player Portrait
- Token Table
- Health Bar
- Slot For Chosen Action
Chicken Button:
Used to run away during battles; click the button below to go to the sound sample of a possible sound effect used for this option.
Monster Health:
This will be the health bar at the bottom of the monster, showing how much more damage they can take.
Intializing a Fight
During a Battle, the player deck is randomly shuffled, with a basic deck starting at 7 cards out of a 20 card limit, with the top 3 cards revealed.
Symbols:
Timer
The timer is will be added later on, since it won’t be needed for single player.
Draw Deck
The Draw Deck will also be an icon, but, won’t fit on the portrait mode for phones.
Player Turns:
During a battle, all of the players will take their turns at the same time, and when cards are selected, some of the following things can happen.
- The selected card gets raised and the other cards go dim.
- The first monster that could be targeted, will be selected
- A target indicator (which matches your player’s color) will be placed above said target
- The monster then lights up
- The “Select a Card” button, turns into a “Confirm” button
- A dimmed version of the card selected is placed in the Chosen Action Slot.
When there are multiple enemies in a battle, different targets may be selected.
Monsters’s Turns
Each type monster has their own cards; and they one-by-one pick cards from their decks, and if there’s multiplayer, they pick a random target. If two of the same type of enemy are in a battle together, they draw from the same deck.
Tokens
These items represent status effects and can be given to players and the enemies. When a token is received, a stack is created, which can have up to 5 coins, and a new stack can be created based on each token type. If a higher value of a type of token is obtained, it automatically goes to the top of the stack. A positive token can overwrite a negative token, and a negative token can overwrite a positive! Each token is removed after each turn, and effect the player based on the type of token it is. The heart tokens effect the health of the one holding it; Power tokens effect the damage dealt if the creature with the token attacks; and the Armor tokens effect the defense of the holder.

Kelsey’s Opinion
I personally like The idea of a card combat game in Box Critters. I haven’t really seen these kind of mechanics before, so this is all new to me, I know this has been hinted at for a long time, and to see the progress towards that release date is spectacular; there’s been more and more teasers since this post was created, but, I wanted to make this solely for about the doc released by RocketSnail. Personally, I don’t like the games that force a fight on you, without the option to escape or skip the monster, so to see those ideals, just like in ToonTown, is awesome and brings back some nostalgia. I cant wait to see it when it releases, I already know this will be a fun update.
Nessa’s Opinion
I really like the idea of the card game, to me it reminds me of Cardjitsu Snow, and brings back a giant wave a nostalgia. The monsters (especially the spider) are super adorable and I cant wait to see all the new cards, how well they’re designed and what item they’ll go with.
